PROPOSED RETURN OF JUNIOR CRICKET AT NESTON CC
Following the recent Government relaxations of lock-down and social distancing requirements, Neston's Junior Cricket Section is planning the phased return of junior cricket for the remainder of the 2020 season.
Whilst current Government restrictions will prevent us from returning to anything like 'normal service', we do feel that we can now recommence junior coaching sessions in a manner that is safe, enjoyable and worthwhile. As Government restrictions are further lifted or relaxed we will adapt our plans and evolve towards some form of 'normality' and hopefully some competitive matches before the season ends. For now, we are just really happy to be looking forward to any form of cricket!
Details of when cricket coaching sessions will start and how they will operate are set out below. I'm afraid there is quite a lot of information that we need to convey to you to ensure that everyone knows exactly what is happening and how we are going to manage everything under the current restrictions.
Our primary objective is to ensure that safety is maintained throughout. Please be assured that our 'back to cricket' planning is based upon and compliant with all Government and ECB guidelines and restrictions. This has meant lots of compromises to how we can operate for the rest of the season. There will be limitations to the amount of cricket that we can provide, but I hope that these will not be too restrictive and I ask for your cooperation and understanding throughout.
It is important that parents understand the process for booking a place on our junior coaching sessions, how to become a member of the Club (if you are not already), how to register with the junior cricket section and how the coaching sessions will be managed. All of those details are below.
Beyond that, this web page contains useful, but slightly less pressing information about junior cricket at Neston. Please feel free to read those sections at your leisure.
I look forward to seeing you all very soon. In the meantime if you have any queries, concerns, or suggestions please do not hesitate to email me at juniorcricket@nestoncricketclub.co.uk

Junior Training Sessions for the Rest of the 2020 Season
Coaching for Under 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s (Years 9, 10, 11 & 12) will start on Tuesday 7 July 2020 and run for the remainder of the season. Sessions will run from 6.30pm to 8.00pm.
Coaching for Under 7s, 8s, and 9s (Years 2, 3 & 4) will start on Friday 10 July 2020 and will run from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. Dependent upon the potential running of the ECB's 'All Stars Programme' for this age group (see details below) these sessions may run for the remainder of the season.
Coaching for Under 10s, and 11s (Years 5 & 6) will start on Friday 10 July 2020 and will run from 6.15pm to 7.45pm. These sessions will run for the remainder of the season.
Coaching for Under 12s, and 13s (Years 7 & 8) will start on Friday 10 July 2020 and will run from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. These sessions will run for the remainder of the season.
In accordance with Government restrictions, ECB guidance and our own risk assessments, the following protocol will need to be fully complied with before anyone is allowed to join any of the above coaching sessions.
1. Players must be a current Member of The Neston Club.
NON MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: We normally allow non-members to attend for three sessions before requiring them to join. However, as numbers attending each session will be restricted initially to 20 we feel Members should be given priority for the foreseeable future. That said, it is worth noting that for the remainder of the season we will not be charging our normal Registration/coaching session fees. That cumulative saving will go a long way to covering the cost of The Neston Club's current fantastic 3 month introductory membership scheme (Membership and joining details can be found at www.thenestonclub.co.uk).
2. Players must be Registered for the 2020 season with the Junior Cricket Section.
This is part of our 'Safeguarding' requirements. Registration ensures that we have accurate records of every child with contact details, any medical issues, etc. Everybody who wants to play junior cricket has to Register even if you have done so in previous years. Details of how to Register are below. There is no Registration Fee for 2020. If you haven’t registered your child I’m afraid they will not be able to take part in coaching sessions.
3. Players must book their place on every training session that they want to attend.
Numbers will be restricted for each session to ensure that we can manage social distancing issues. Initially the number of children attending any one session will be limited to 20 until we have had a chance to review how our social distancing measures are working.
Sessions can be booked no more than one week in advance by email to juniorcricket@nestoncricketclub.co.uk. Please provide the name of your child and the session that they want to attend. If available, a place will be confirmed by return email. If there are no places remaining we will operate an alternate week system and your child will be given priority the following week.

Before attending coaching sessions
- Unfortunately, we will not be in a position to allow children to use the Club's equipment. All players need to bring their own marked tennis or cricket ball and bat plus any other cricket equipment. We recommend that children also bring their own hand sanitiser. If your child does not have protective equipment they will not be excluded from attending, but they may not be able to undertake certain activities (e.g. batting against a hard ball without a helmet). Further down in this Newsletter are details of our local cricket equipment supplier, ‘Sportsville’ should you need any equipment.
- Changing facilities will not be available. Players need to arrive in their kit. For practice sessions, children should wear comfortable and warm clothing and non slip trainers suitable for taking part in sporting activities. A drink and hats/caps and sunscreen to protect against the sun’s rays are also essential.
- Toilet facilities will be available.
- Do not arrive too early, aim to arrive at the start of your session to help with social distancing.
- Car parking should be spread out across the entire car park to ensure social distancing.
- We have staggered start/finish times of Friday night sessions to reduce congestion at dropping off and picking up times. Please arrive and leave close to the start and finish times of your session.
- All children must be signed in to every session immediately on arrival. Please ensure that your child registers at the table in front of the pavilion on the back pitch. All children must be signed out before leaving the ground.
- Bags must be placed and spaced out in the designated area.
- Until Government guidelines are relaxed further, all sessions will be split into discrete Groups of six (one Coach and five children). This will effectively form a 'bubble' for the session and no swapping or mixing of Groups will be allowed. On arrival your child will be assigned to a Group for the evening.
- Maintain 2m social distancing at all times throughout the session.
- Bats and Balls should not be shared between members of different households.
- Batters to knock or kick the ball back to the bowler and not throw it as usual – the batter should try not to handle the balls.
- Avoid touching any surfaces such as covers as much as possible whilst on club premises.
Do not overstay your allocated session. - No saliva or sweat should come into contact with any of the balls at any time.
- As always, the health and safety of participants is paramount - please ensure those using the nets minimise the risk of injury (wear helmets, pads, boxes etc).
- Ensure that all personal equipment is collected and taken home.
- All players must 'sign out' before leaving the ground.
- Unfortunately practice nights can fall foul of adverse weather conditions. If we have to cancel a session we will let you know at the earliest opportunity by email, on Twitter @Neston_CC and on the Junior Cricket Facebook page.

'All Stars' at Neston
Once again we were looking forward to being part of the ECB All Stars initiative in 2020. Our programme at Neston was due to start on 8 May 2020, sadly this was not possible. The ECB are still hopeful that they can run 'All Stars before the end of the current season. We are awaiting news and will let you know as soon as details emerge.
All Stars Cricket provides a fantastic first experience for boys and girls aged 5-8 years old where they’re guaranteed 8 weeks of jam-packed fun, activity and skills development. The programme is designed to introduce boys and girls to the sport, teaching them new skills, helping them make new friends and have a great time doing so. Every child that registers will receive a backpack full of goodies.

Dynamos Cricket
Dynamos Cricket is another new initiative from the ECB that was due to start in 2020. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 it has been cancelled for this season, but will hopefully begin in 2021. Details of the proposed programme are below.
Dynamos will provide a fantastic next step for all those graduating from All Stars Cricket and the perfect introduction for all 8-11 year-olds new to the sport!
Complementing junior cricket, Dynamos provides children with a more social offer focused on developing fundamental movement skills and applying them in an exciting game of countdown cricket.
We know how important it is to look like the heroes of the game, so every child who registers will receive their very own Dynamos Cricket New Balance t-shirt, personalised with their name and number.

Transition to Senior Cricket
One of the Junior Section’s primary aims is to inspire youngsters to go on to play cricket in their adult life. Making the transition into senior cricket on a Saturday or Sunday is a big step in any young player's development and can be very daunting.
ECB guidelines state that generally juniors cannot take part in open-age cricket until they are in Year 8 (under 13s level). From that age onwards Neston will take into consideration the ability and the potential safety of the player as well as other considerations as outlined by the ECB Guidelines for Junior Players in Open Age Cricket.
Juniors transitioning into adult cricket will most likely start in the 4th XI. From there we will ensure that there is a plan in place to ensure that they are given appropriate and adequate chance to shine and progress. If juniors are asked to play in adult cricket it should not be just to make up the numbers.
At Neston we will do our utmost to manage the step up in a manner that puts players and parents minds at ease and makes the whole experience enjoyable and worthwhile.

Safeguarding Children at Neston CC
Neston Cricket Section is committed to ensuring all Children participating in cricket have a safe and positive experience. We will do this by:
- Recognising all children participating in cricket (regardless of age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, ability or disability) have the right to have fun and be protected from harm in a safe environment
- Appointing a Club Welfare Officer and ensuring they attend training modules required by the ECB,
- Ensuring individuals working within cricket at, or for, our club provide a welcoming, safe, and fun experience for children
- Adopting and implementing the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) “Safe Hands – Cricket’s Policy for Safeguarding Children”

Junior Cricket Funding
So why do we need to charge junior cricket registration and match fees on top of the Club’s membership fee?
The junior cricket section’s annual turnover is between £2,000 and £3,000 with expenditure required on equipment such as cricket balls, equipment, trophies, subscriptions and the excellent professional coaching that we provide.
To cover these costs we do have income from some great sponsorship deals (namely the Carpenters Group) but to be sustainable in the long term we do need to raise some additional funds. This is where the registration and match fees come in. For the £25 Registration Fee your child gets professional coaching for 16 weeks through the summer. We also charge a £1 match fee for those boys and girls that play in any of the junior teams. This money helps to pay for the balls, equipment and trophies that we need to buy every season.

Junior cricket sponsors
The Neston Club and the main cricket section have several sponsors, but the Junior Section is particularly grateful to the Carpenters Group one of the country’s leading providers of insurance and legal services who provide very significant support allowing us to keep our registration and match fees to a minimum. We also receive great help from the Harold Uren Fund and from the Ladies of the Club who run a very successful Afternoon Tea each year to raise money for the juniors.
If your company or organisation would be willing to make a donation or provide some form of sponsorship please let us know.

Fundraising
As you’ve read above, we are always in need of funds for the junior section to buy new equipment and to extend our professional coaching programme - particularly through the winter. We would also love to remove the need to charge registration and match fees. To do this we will need to raise additional funds from other sources.
This summer we are hoping to run Friday evening BBQ’s and one or two other events. We really hope that all parents will support these efforts by coming along and getting involved. We would also welcome any ideas and suggestions that you may have for fund raising activities. Your support would be very, very welcome

Do you fancy getting involved in junior cricket?
Almost without exception, everyone who is involved in running the Junior Cricket Section has started because their own children were playing. It’s a great game to come down and watch on a lovely Sunday morning or at practice sessions during the week and often it’s quite a natural thing to do to get involved in some way or other.
Additional help is always welcome - it’s a big section with well over one hundred juniors to train and coach and about 80 competitive games to organise and manage each season. Willing volunteers would never be turned away!
There’s lots to do such as taking registers on practice nights, general organising and supervising, helping the coaches, helping to manage a junior side, scoring, umpiring and even becoming a trained coach. It’s not just Dads and Mums that can get involved, Grandparents are more than welcome.
So, if you would like to get involved please email juniorcricket@nestoncricketclub.co.uk. It’s very social and very rewarding and if nothing else it would help us to build a great family atmosphere.
For any potential umpires, scorers and coaches, the Club will arrange training courses and help you along the way. So, if you do fancy getting involved please get in touch and we will welcome you with open arms

Learn how to Umpire & Score
Understanding the Laws of Cricket and being able to accurately keep the score are two fundamental parts of the game. As well as developing the skills to play cricket, we are keen to ensure that all youngsters understand some of the intricacies of umpiring and are able to keep a good scorebook - skills that will stay with them throughout their cricketing career.
And, it’s not just the youngsters we are looking at; Mums, Dads, Grandparents, indeed anyone with an interest are all encouraged to learn the basics.
All being well we will organise some fun but informative sessions for parents and children in the near future. For those that may be interested in going one step further, there are short courses available through the ECB and the Cheshire Cricket Board that we would support anyone enrolling on. If you are interested in learning more then please email us at juniorcricket@nestoncricketclub.co.uk.
Hopefully, we will end up with youngsters with a better understanding of the game and ideally with a pool of parents who would love to help out on match days
And, it’s not just the youngsters we are looking at; Mums, Dads, Grandparents, indeed anyone with an interest are all encouraged to learn the basics.
All being well we will organise some fun but informative sessions for parents and children in the near future. Neston Juniors on the www
The Neston Club (as it’s now known) has a main web site at www.thenestonclub.co.uk where you can find details of all sporting and social activities.
The cricket section has its own web site at www.nestoncricketclub.com with this dedicated section for the juniors providing all of the information that you will need to stay in touch.
The cricket section also has an ECB Play-Cricket site at www.neston.play-cricket.com. We use this mainly for details of fixtures, results, league tables and stats. This is the place to go to keep up to date with the progress of our competitive teams. Scorecards for most of the games we play will be uploaded to this site and that means you can see all of your own individual playing records and stats.
Please note that the two cricket sites are currently being updated. Please bear with us and hopefully in a week or so they will be transformed and ready for the new season.
News from the cricket section can also be found on Twitter @Neston_CC and on Facebook
